My suitcase has been lost, what should I do?

Steps to take if you lose your suitcase while travelling

The hot weather and the holiday season par excellence have arrived. Therefore, today in our blog we propose a post for you to know what to do in case your suitcase does not arrive at its destination. The truth is that it is a fact that happens every day in the different airports and that ends up becoming an unexpected setback. Various studies by SITA (International Society for Aeronautical Telecommunications) show that despite the increase in the number of passengers, the number of lost suitcases is decreasing all the time. The numbers are optimistic, but even so, twice as many bags are lost in Europe as in America.

Of course, lost luggage is a possibility we have to reckon with every time we board a plane, although it is worth noting that in the vast majority of cases it is simply a delay in baggage delivery.

What do I do if my suitcase is lost?

Recommendations:

- Before getting into the worst situation, we must make sure that our suitcase has definitely not passed through the corresponding luggage belt and that it is not in the lost property.

- If we consider it to be lost, we must go to the airline counter or to the pick-up desk to process the PIR (Baggage Irregularity Report) and thus record the incident with our suitcase. This document must contain our personal details as well as all the flight and lost luggage references, which will be used to process the claim. Never leave the airport without the PIR and keep the check-in sticker!

- Remember that if the reason for the disappearance is theft, you must file a report at the airport police station.

- The claim period is 21 days and starts from the moment the baggage should have appeared on the conveyor belt. If the baggage ends up appearing before the 21 days have elapsed, it is considered a baggage delay and as a passenger you are entitled to claim compensation for the expenses you have been forced to incur as a result of the delay, provided that you present the tickets approving the delay. After 21 days, the luggage is considered lost and the compensation can be up to 1,300 euros per passenger.

- You should know that the airline is liable for the damage caused in case of loss or damage of checked baggage, provided that the damage was caused on board the aircraft or in the custody of the airline.

Keep these steps in mind in case of lost luggage and above all, remember to start your holiday on the right foot and take it as just another anecdote. Everything has a solution!
