How to place luggage safely in the car

Whether we are planning a weekend getaway or a well-deserved holiday, we usually end up filling the boot with suitcases, rucksacks, bags and other items that we think are essential. Who hasn't played tetris at some point trying to fit all the belongings in? Of course, it is a situation that happens very often and, above all, we must bear in mind that an excessive load can entail certain risks during our journey. Therefore, in our blog we offer you some simple tips on how to pack your luggage safely.

How to organise your luggage?

It is very important to know that luggage placement is a relevant factor that affects stability and, consequently, driving and safety. A badly secured suitcase can become a projectile in the event of a collision or sudden braking. To give you an idea, it is estimated that at 50 kilometres per hour an object can see its weight multiplied between 30 and 50 times. In other words, a small suitcase weighing about 3 kilos can become a dangerous projectile weighing more than 100 kilos. And all this in the blink of an eye.

The key is a balanced placement of the heaviest items in the centre of the luggage compartment, leaving the front and rear seats clear of bulk. If you can foresee any bags rolling off, secure them with ropes or clamps to avoid any potential mishaps. The rear parcel shelf should also be clear of objects, even if they are small enough to reduce your field of vision.

Can I put luggage on the seats?

Although it is not very advisable, if we are travelling without occupants, we can occupy the space with our lighter belongings. In this situation, the load should be secured with seat belts or a protective net to ensure the safety of the front occupants.

Can I be fined for carrying an overload?

The answer is yes, and the penalties can range from 301 euros to 4,600 euros depending on the degree of infringement. For more specific and detailed information, you can visit the website of the Dirección General de Tráfico.

Check your tyres and lights

Before setting off on your journey, it is essential to check the tyre pressure in your car. Bear in mind that the heavier you are, the more pressure you need to add to your tyres. You will find these indications in the vehicle's technical guide. At the same time, the weight will make the front part of the car slightly higher, so you will have to change the elevation of the lights both to avoid losing your field of vision and to avoid dazzling other cars.

Safety distance

Carrying a load in our car means a reduction in power and responsiveness. We notice this easily when accelerating and stopping the vehicle, so it is vital to increase the safety distance and to make sure before overtaking.

Basic tips for loading our luggage compartment

To sum up, these are the main tips for loading your luggage into the boot. Remember, first and foremost, that safety and caution on the road are the best remedies.

- Place the heaviest objects, such as hard cases, in the centre of the boot first, followed by the smallest and lightest bags, so as to alter the centre of gravity as little as possible.

- Once the load space has been organised, make sure that all items are secured and if necessary, use a net to anchor them more securely.

- Be aware that any object inside the car, however harmless it may seem, can become a dangerous projectile.

- In the event of carrying more load than foreseen, we can make use of the vehicle's cow or a trailer.

- Bear in mind that loading your car will lead to a change in its behaviour, such as acceleration and speed reduction or fuel consumption.
